“Earth Days” is a 2009 documentary film about the start of the environmental movement in the United States. It was directed by Robert Stone and premiered on United States television on April 19. 2010, PBS as part of the “American Experience” history series.

Presented by Bloomsburg University’s Green Campus Initiative, free and open to all, 7 p.m. in the Exchange Ballroom on Tuesday, the 23rd of April — one day after Earth Day 2013 (and the 449th anniversary of Shakespeare’s birth, as it happens).

“Earth Days” combines personal testimony and archival media while reviewing the development of the modern environmental movement—from the post-war 1950s and the 1962 publication of Rachel Carson’s bestseller “Silent Spring” to the first successful 1970 Earth Day celebration. The stories of the era’s pioneers feature the former United States Secretary of the Interior Stewart Udall; biologist/”The Population Bomb” author Paul Ehrlich; “Whole Earth Catalog” founder Stewart Brand; Apollo 9 astronaut Rusty Schweickart; Dennis Meadows, “The Forecaster” scientist and Emeritus Professor of Systems Management; and Pete McCloskey, “The Politician”, formerly Republican. Also included are Richard Nixon, Governor of California Jerry Brown, Jimmy Carter, Denis Hayes, Jacques-Yves Cousteau; and Hunter Lovins.

“Earth Days” served as the closing night film of the 2009 Sundance Film Festival and won the Sheffield Green Award, 2009 Sheffield Doc/Fest.

Six professional photographers share their experiences of gas drilling in Pennsylvania. The exhibit opens on Friday, April 19th with a reception and will remain on view through June 8th, 2013. Many associated events will take place here as well.

The Moose Exchange Stairwell Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition entitled Marcellus Shale Documentary Project. The exhibition includes the work of six professional photographers who share in the telling of the complex story of Marcellus Shale gas drilling in Pennsylvania. This traveling exhibition opens with a reception on Friday, April 19th, at 6 p.m. and will remain on view through June 8, 2013. Artist Talks are scheduled for Wednesday, May 1st, beginning at 5 p.m. Four of the six photographers in the exhibition will discuss the project and their individual contributions to it. The Marcellus Shale Documentary Project photographers are Noah Addis, Nina Berman, Brian Cohen, Scott Goldsmith, Lynn Johnson, and Martha Rial.

A series of related programs will take place throughout the duration of the exhibition. All events are free and open to the public, and except as noted take place in the Moose Exchange Ballroom.

More about the Marcellus Shale Documentary Project: “For the best part of a year, the photographers traveled across the Commonwealth, meeting people, listening to and recording stories, and documenting images from across the region. The exhibition represents each photographer’s aesthetic, each having chosen a different angle from which to view the subject. Together, they offer a compelling narrative that represents, they believe, an honest appraisal of how the arrival of Marcellus Shale drilling has affected communities around the Commonwealth. The validity of this work is established not by the credentials of the photographers: the fact that their work has been featured in publications such as National Geographic, LIFE, or The New York Times; or that two of them have won the Pulitzer Prize, one has been included in the Whitney Museum of American Art Biennial; or that one has a doctorate degree. Instead, it is the level of intellect, sensitivity, and skill with which they approach their work.”

For more information about the MSDP, visit the-‐msdp.us For additional information about the exhibition at the Moose Exchange, contact Sue O’Donnell at sue.mooseexchange@gmail.com.

Friday April 19, 6 p.m.: Opening Reception for the Exhibition, with light refreshments
An acclaimed agenda-free documentary, uniting diverse audiences in a shared understanding of energy and its efficiency.

Did you see the Columbia County Bicentennial Time Capsule, sealed at the Fairgrounds on Saturday evening, March 23rd? The Exchange made a contribution, including the donation of a t-shirt from Studio GEAR. Look for these things in 50 years!

Built especially for the Columbia County Bicentennial celebration, the aluminum chest will tour the county for the next fifty years, says Columbia County Commissioner Dave Kovach. By putting the capsule on display in public, “Nobody’s going to have to remember where it’s buried,” he said. It will first go on display in the lobby of the county’s annex building on West Main Street in Bloomsburg before hitting the road to other venues including schools and libraries — and perhaps the Exchange!

Kawneer Company employees designed and fabricated the chest at the Kawneer plant on 12th Street.

The Exchange’s contribution included one of our stylish hats as well as a rack card and postcard signed by executive director Oren B. Helbok; Studio GEAR gave a “Starving Artist” t-shirt.

Other items donated for posterity included
• A flyer advertising the 2013 Bloomsburg Fair
• A couple of the most recent editions of the Press Enterprise
• A book of Columbia County history
• A book penned by Volunteers in Medicine director Bette Grey
• A commemorative sculpture from Kawneer
• A menu from Steph’s Subs
• A license plate produced for the bicentennial celebration
• Patches from the Boy Scouts, a local fishing club and local civic groups
• A collectible plate featuring the Twin Bridges over Fishing Creek
• Cards signed by some local youngsters
• A 2002 news article about the restoration of Bloomsburg’s town fountain
